Surviving in a wilderness scenario begins with proper mindset and preplanning. You can have all of the latest greatest gear available and it will do you no good at all if you aren't proficient with it.
Tip #1- Always expect the worse to happen while enjoying the great outdoors.
Tip #2- practice using all of your gear in an easy environment before loading up and heading out on adventures. This can be done in your backyard or on short day hikes. Use it as a shakedown to determine strengths and weaknesses in yourself and your equipment.
Tip #3- Always have backups for the most vital equipment. Fire starters, water filtration, navigation, shelter.
Tip #4- No matter what, DO NOT PANIC!! If you get lost, STOP, take a break and regain your bearings.
Tip #5- If youre new to the outdoors, find someone that is experienced to go with the first few times.

There are countless opportunities in the United States to experience the outdoors. From simple day hikes to multi day or even multi month hikes. Several states have apps through their conservation departments with a lot of great information about what is available. In Missouri, for example, there is a free app called MO Outdoors. It shows you all of the conservation areas beginning with the one closest to you. It also lets you filter the search according to your interests. (camping, hiking, hunting, bird watching, etc.)
There are plenty of apps and maps available for free. Do a quick search according to your location.
